Amboise to Paris

Up early this morning so we could take the car back in plenty of time to catch our 10.23 train.  No problems there - we were back in town (via taxi) around 8.30.  We grabbed a few things at the supermarket, then walked along the river once more, despite the drizzle.  The Loire has dropped over a metre since we arrived on Thursday.  Compare the top photo, taken Thursday, with the bottom photo, taken Monday.  The little tree is the same.

We walked to the station and caught our train to Orleans, then the connecting train to Paris Austerlitz.  (Paris has six major train stations; Austerlitz is the third one we've been to.)  Caelli met us on the platform with a couple of items from her local boulangerie (bakery).  A quick trip on the metro, pop up at Oberkampf metro station and look around to get our bearings, and bang! there it is!  Visible from the metro station!  Wow!  We let ourselves in and went up to the 4th floor where we were met by Helene.  The apartment we were given was not the one I had booked.  They have a larger, more expensive apartment, and they figured that since it was vacant, we might as well have it and be more comfortable.  Same low price!  By Paris standards, the apartment is huge, and it even has a balcony.

After lunch (eating some supplies that Caelli had provided for us), we headed for the Latin Quarter so Caelli could show us her university.  But first - some lovely purple trees that were all over Place d'Italie.

Walking through the streets, admiring the buildings, and then we came upon the Pantheon, which is basically a tomb for famous people, and currently undergoing some restoration work, hence the crane.

And turning around, our first view of the Eiffel Tower.

Off to Saint-Michel, with a lovely fountain....(and some crepes)...

and then onto Ile de la Cite, and Notre Dame.

The Seine is also running full, with many of the walking paths along the river underwater.

We caught a bus back to Oberkampf, bought a few more things at the nearby supermarket and had salad and sandwiches for tea.  Caelli left for home around 10pm, saying how weird it felt to say goodbye to Mum and Dad to go home to her own place.
