Vernazza to Aosta

Caelli came to the station to see us off early this morning.  It was a lovely, sunny day - the first sunny morning we have seen on the trip so far - and we were to spend the best part of the day on trains or at stations!  Three changes of train, at Sestri Levante, Torino and Ivrea.  The final hour and a bit from Ivrea up the Valle d'Aosta was beautiful, with waterfalls, castles, and snow-capped mountains popping in and out.

We walked to our B&B, which is lovely.  The room is quite large, with old wooden floorboards and some ancient wooden doors.  The en-suite is modern and clean, and the room opens onto a lovely sunny courtyard filled with cats and flowers.

We wandered into the centre of town, looking for the Tourist Information Centre, which is inside an old Roman arch, the Praetorian Gate (25 BC).

We walked around the Roman Theatre, which is very impressive.  It was built from the end of the first century BC to the beginning of the first century AD.

A little further out is the Arch of Augustus (25 BC)  and an old Roman bridge (end of first century BC).

And in every direction you look there are snow-covered mountains!

Gelato flavours: limone and bacio (choc-nut).  There are only two of us to eat it here!
