Mürren - Grütschalp

I woke early this morning as the people in the apartment above were up'n'at'em from 5.30am. Their floor squeaks quite loudly. Full cloud again this morning, although many locals told us today would be "better" than yesterday. Well...

We headed up to the supermarket to get some milk for brekky. After brekky, we went back again for some more prolonged shopping.  Meat is very expensive here. Ham is between 40 and 50 Swiss francs per kilo - $45-55 Australian. Beef and pork were similar. We bought fish fingers. Also Honey Smacks. Why can't we buy them in Australia now? We slowly headed back to the apartment, and the cloud was shifting and the sun was shining. Hmmm - maybe the locals were right!

And this is what it REALLY looks like out of our window!

I'd thought to go to Lauterbrunnen (in the valley) to see the waterfalls, but we met Kitty (our hostess) on the way back and she said make the most of the sun and views up on the mountain. So...we walked to the station...

...and caught the train to Grütschalp, a 20 minute journey (at maximum 27km/h!)

The walk back to Mürren along the clifftop was sunny for a short while, but soon the cloud rolled in again. We could see into the valleys and some of the mountains above us, but the peaks had disappeared, never to return today.

I enjoyed myself taking lots of photos of flowers (because there were no birds). One kestrel - that's it.

Along the way we found a rather large snowbank, and had a bit of fun. I used my carrot (and the ubiquitous spruce cones). Caelli pretended she was attacked by an avalanche.

I've included this photo because the tops of the spruces are overloaded with cones. Maybe you can see them if you zoom in.

We stopped at Winteregg (halfway) for a hot chocolate (Shokko Dampfherlitzt in Swiss German!) We arrived back in Mürren for a late lunch.

Mid-afternoon, Phil went for a walk looking for the paragliders who were taking off above Mürren.

Late afternoon, Caelli and I walked to Gimmelwald again. This time we could see where we were going! The cloud cover hid maybe a third of the mountains, but we could see the valleys, which we couldn't yesterday. Compare these photos with yesterday's!

We managed to get down there within 35 minutes, and caught the gondola back up. From there, it's just 186 steps back to Chalet Böbs!
