Mürren - Trümmelbachfälle

I got up at 7.30am to discover completely clear skies! Mountains and valleys! I left everyone else in bed and went out walking at 7.45am. I ended up at Spielbodenalp, which is a hut that's south of here at 1793m altitude. The views and wildflowers were amazing.

Phil, meanwhile, had gone looking for shots of Piz Gloria from Mürren. It's just to the right of the first small cloud. Some other photos of the town, too.

We all headed off late morning for Blumental - literally, Flower Valley. It ended up being too rugged for Caelli's foot, so she turned back and watched the paragliders take off from the mountainside. Phil and I kept on. The walking track is open, but a lot of it was covered with snow, so we had to be creative with where and how we walked.

And, no - he wasn't trying to confuse other hikers.  It was on the ground when we found it. Cross my heart!

After a late lunch, we headed down into the Lauterbrunnen valley. This was the first time we'd taken the gondola from Gimmelwald to Stechelberg (on the valley floor). Wow!

Some amazing waterfalls dropping off the approximately 300 metre high cliff. This one is the Mürrenbachfälle - the stream that runs down past Chalet Böbs and which we hear from the window.

The valley was carved out by a glacier long ago, and there are lots of meadows, which at this time of year are covered with wildflowers.

We walked for a couple of kilometres, stopping along the way to shelter from the completely unexpected rain, until we got to Trümmelbachfälle, the Trümmelbach Falls. This is a powerful waterfall that cuts its way inside the cliff. It drains the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and carries 20,000 tons of boulder detritus per year. It has a total height of 140 metres over 10 drops, and the noise is incredible. It's also very difficult to photograph.

From Trümmelbachfälle, we caught a bus to Lauterbrunnen, then the gondola up to Grütschalp, then the railway to Mürren. It was still raining lightly, but visibility was great, and we saw everything we missed on our first ascent on Sunday. And then walking back from the station to Chalet Böbs, we saw....

MAMMAL WATCH:  Gämsen (Chamois in English). Yay!!
